Lunch Time Talks

The Association is pleased to offer a series of lunch time talks of interest to over 50s. These are usually held on the first Monday of the month.

Following a very interesting March Lunch Time Talk by the South Australian Country Fire Service, as the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, the Lunch Time Talks were suspended.
The Lunch time Talks resumed in September.

Bring you lunch and join us. Costs are $4.00 for Members and $5.00 for non-members.

Our October talk on Monday, 12 October is by Associate Professor Stewart Walker from Forensic, Environmental and Analytical Chemistry, Flinders University.

CSI: Adelaide – Forensic Fact or Forensic Fiction?
Stewart says “Forensic Science has appeared in numerous television shows.
We know what happens in CSI:Las Vegas doesn’t always stay in CSI:Las Vegas.
Also the richest people in Midsummer are the real estate agents and the undertakers.
How does Adelaide fit in? Once, erroneously, described as the ‘murder capitol of the world’ how does Adelaide rank on the global crime scale?
How do we detect and SOLVE crimes and, also how do we PREVENT crimes.”
Using examples from his own investigations, and others, Associate Professor Walker will take us on a guided tour of the crimes occurring in Adelaide, compare with crimes in other places and, most importantly, on a positive note, what forensic scientists in Adelaide are doing to improve detection and prevent crimes occurring.
Stewart completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland followed by a PhD with Professor The Lord Tedder, and was also awarded the Frank Muir/University of St. Andrews Prize for Humour!  He has then undertaken research into advanced instruments, environmental contamination of the Great Barrier Reef and a number of innovative forensic techniques to solve and prevent crimes.
